As we explained in previous articles, areas subject to explosion of gas are classified into zones. According to the considered zones, equipments of different classification can be used as shown in the chart.
If the equipment is to be used in hybrid mixtures, it must be suitable for such use and tested if appropriate. An item of equipment marked II 2 G/D is thus not necessarily suitable and permissible for use in hybrid mixtures. Two or more classifications can apply to the same equipment. For example, let’s take a device used for exploration probe inside a bin (internal area 20). If it is in the zone classified 22 it can be included into the category II 1D or 3D. If the item of work is to be used outside and inside the bin, only the probing section will have to be classified under the 1 D category. Classification in zone 3 is always completed through a self certification. Zone 1 is classified by a notifying body whereas the zone 2 classification depends on the equipment. If it is an electric device, it requires the acknowledgement by the notifying body.
